the 'marketing team is doing nothing' joke is funny but they're definitely not just sitting around
I keep seeing that meme about Rockstar's marketing team clocking in and doing absolutely nothing, and yeah it's funny. But people forget how much prep goes into this stuff. You can't just slap a trailer together in an afternoon when millions of people are gonna freeze-frame every pixel.
Dan Houser talked about this back around RDR2. The planning for interviews, media coverage, storefront artwork, contingency plans, all that takes months. It's not like they can call up IGN and say "hey can we do a cover story tomorrow?"
What's wild is how compressed RDR2's marketing actually was. The gameplay trailer dropped in August 2018, and the game came out in October. The second gameplay trailer was three weeks before launch. Rob Nelson did press literally days before release. Rockstar knows they don't need a year-long hype cycle when the game speaks for itself.
So yeah, Strauss said summer marketing and July was dead quiet. But I'm betting August or September things start moving fast. They've got the pre-order page up, the Ultimate Edition details, the trailer views are insane. The silence is probably just them making sure everything they show is locked in and won't get cut later.
I'm not worried. They'll turn the faucet on when they're ready, and it'll be a flood.
