GTA 6 developer Rockstar accused of enforcing crunch, weaponising bonus payments, and ignoring a widening gender pay gap

This ain't looking good for Rockstar

So while we're all hyped waiting for GTA VI, some pretty serious stuff is coming out about how Rockstar's treating the people actually making the game. A new report from Game Developer has multiple devs speaking out, and it's not pretty.

Crunch is back despite promises

Remember how Rockstar made a big deal about improving conditions after the GTA V era crunch stories? Yeah, apparently that hasn't stuck. Devs at the UK offices are saying crunch culture is alive and well, and management is actively pushing it, not just turning a blind eye.

Bonuses used as leverage

Here's a particularly nasty detail — Rockstar is apparently using bonus payments as a weapon against staff. Instead of rewarding hard work, bonuses are being dangled or withheld to keep people in line. That's some seriously toxic incentive structure right there.

Gender pay gap getting worse

And then there's the pay inequity issue. Female devs at Rockstar are reportedly earning significantly less than male counterparts, and the company is doing nothing to address it. In fact, the gap is apparently widening.

Union push continues

All of this is happening while Rockstar employees are pushing for official union recognition, especially after some high-profile firings earlier in 2025. The workers are organizing because clearly management isn't going to fix this stuff on their own.

Look, I want GTA VI to be incredible as much as anyone here. But the people making it deserve basic fairness and respect. This stuff matters.

How do you think these workplace issues at Rockstar will affect GTA VI's development and final quality?

Honestly this stuff makes it hard to just enjoy the hype. RP communities talk a big game about respect and inclusion, but then we're supporting a studio that can't even pay women fairly? The crunch thing is wild to me too. Burnt out devs don't make good content. We've all seen what happens when updates drop half-baked because the team was running on fumes. The union push is the right move. Hope they get recognition because management clearly isn't fixing this on their own. VI will sell regardless, but the people building it deserve better than bonus manipulation and pay gaps.

People forget that some of the best missions in Rockstar history came from teams that had room to breathe creatively. The detail work in Red Dead 2's story beats — those quiet, character-driven moments — that's not crunch thinking. That's people given time to iterate.

Crunch produces bloated content, not quality content. If GTA VI's mission design suffers because burnt-out devs couldn't refine their ideas, we all lose. Solidarity with the workers pushing for change.

Look, any heist crew that doesn't take care of its people is gonna burn out before the big score. You can't run a tight operation when half your team is underpaid and the other half is grinding 80-hour weeks. That's how sloppy mistakes happen.

The payout structure matters. If Rockstar's weaponizing bonuses instead of rewarding clean work, they're killing morale and retention. Experienced devs who know the systems will bounce, and you end up with a weaker crew going into the final stretch.

I want GTA VI to hit clean, but not at the cost of the people pulling the job. Fair cuts, reasonable timelines, equal pay for equal work. That's just basic operational efficiency.
