GTA 6 Buying Guide: Get Ready For Sticker Shock

Saw GameSpot put out a buying guide for launch and the numbers hit different when you lay them all out. If you don't already own a current gen console, you're looking at a minimum of $580 just to get in the door, and that's before tax.

Cheapest new console route is an Xbox Series S at $500. That's $200 more than it launched at back in 2020, which is still wild to me. Series X runs $750 without a disc drive or $800 with one. On PlayStation, the digital PS5 is $600 and a PS5 Pro with a disc drive is $900. Refurb units soften it a little, PS5 certified refurb starts at $500 and Xbox Series S refurb is $400, but those are direct from Sony and Microsoft. Secondhand markets might go lower.

Then the game itself. Standard edition is $80, Ultimate is $100. There's no disc version of GTA 6 at all, so even the boxed copies at retailers just have a code inside. The $100 Ultimate appears to be digital only. So if you want the fancy version and need a console, you're dropping $700 to $1,000 depending on what you pick.

PC players are still waiting, no announcement yet but the article says a PC edition is expected in early 2027. Switch 2 is a no. So it's PS5 or Xbox Series only at launch.

I already preordered the Ultimate Edition and grabbed a PS5, so I'm locked in, but seeing a guide spell out the full entry cost made me realize how pricey this launch is compared to GTA 5 back in 2013. Anyone else doing the math and second guessing their setup?
