GTA 6 Takes The Ridiculous World We Live In And Turns It Up To 11

Rockstar's narrative folks did a chat with Love Magazine and the way they're describing GTA 6's tone is exactly what I've been hoping for since the first trailer. Rupert Humphries, senior VP of narrative, basically said if you're going to put all this effort into building a version of today's world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face. Otherwise you could just go outside and live in the real world. That's the energy I want from a Vice City game.

He also called the world "a pressure cooker for all kinds of insanity," which makes sense when you look at Lucia and Jason. Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern, one of the writers, described Lucia as an ambitious go-getter who'll do anything to get the life she dreams of, while Jason is bound by life's circumstances. They're polar opposites, but the team wanted both to be vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, and able to learn from each other. That's a lot more interesting to me than two characters who just agree on everything.

The wanted system is getting a shakeup too. No more hiding in an alley and waiting for the stars to tick down. Cops are smarter and more persistent, so you'll have to actually plan your crime sprees instead of just outrunning them for 30 seconds. And the Jason and Lucia relationship is supposed to be deeper than it looks, which I'm curious about because GTA has never really nailed a duo dynamic outside of maybe GTA V's three protagonists.

Marketing is ramping up. Miami Heat are wearing GTA 6 jerseys the night before launch, and there's a $400 collector's edition that doesn't even include the game. I know some people are annoyed about that, but I'm just glad Rockstar is leaning all the way into the absurdity. GTA has always been a funhouse mirror of reality, and it sounds like this one is cranked to 11.
