GTA 6 Breaks A Record, And It’s Not Even Out Yet

Circana dropped some purchase intent data and GTA 6 is sitting at 29% among US console and PC players. That's nearly one in three people saying they plan to buy it. According to Circana it's the highest purchase intent they've ever recorded for any game.

Mat Piscatella called it a rare cultural and commercial moment for gaming. He thinks the 13 year gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6 is the main driver. His quote about demand extending beyond software sales stood out too, he expects consoles, accessories, and subscriptions to all get a bump as people prep for launch.

Its anticipation and popularity reinforces the growing influence of video games on the broader entertainment and consumer technology markets.

Sensor Tower has GTA 6 at roughly 7 million units sold already, around $675 million in revenue. They think it could hit 25 million preorders and $2 billion before the game even launches. That's before anyone has actually played the full thing.

Launch lands right before Black Friday, so Piscatella expects PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales to get dragged up too. Makes sense, people need hardware if they're jumping in on day one. The study covers PC and console, but the game is only confirmed for console right now. A PC version is reportedly expected early 2027.

The article also points out consoles are more expensive than ever and GTA 6 won't fix all the industry's deep-rooted problems. Fair enough, but the preorder numbers are still nuts.

Are you in that 29% or holding off until reviews drop?
