GTA 4's multiplayer was pure chaos, and I hope GTA 6 Online brings some of that back

Before Grand Theft Auto Online, GTA 4's multiplayer added 'glorious chaos' to the open world sandbox

I stumbled on that old PC Gamer piece about GTA 4's multiplayer and it hit me how much I miss that era. Liberty City's online wasn't some polished live service, it was just a sandbox with a bunch of modes and zero hand-holding. You'd load into Free Mode at the airport, grab a helicopter, and within five minutes someone was trying to land a car on your rotor blades. No Shark Cards, no grinding, just the city and whatever dumb idea your friends had.

The cops 'n crooks mode alone was better than half the adversary stuff in GTA Online. One team trying to escape, the other ramming them off the road in a Patriot. No lock-on missiles, no flying bikes, just pure bumper-car physics and screaming. And the race lobbies where everyone would vote for the airport loop just to see how many cars you could flip on the first turn. It was broken in the best way.

I know GTA 6 Online is going to be a massive thing, probably even bigger than what we have now. But I hope Rockstar remembers that sometimes less is more. Give us a mode where we can just turn off the HUD, set the wanted level to six, and see how long we last. No objectives, no payouts, just chaos. The kind of stuff that made GTA 4's multiplayer feel like a playground rather than a second job.

With Leonida's map being so varied, imagine a free mode where you can just boat from Vice City to the Keys and start a fight on a sandbar. Or a cops 'n crooks variant with the modern wanted system. I'm not saying ditch the structured content, but leave a corner of the online world for the kind of unscripted mayhem that made Liberty City's multiplayer so memorable.

That line hit home. Between work and my kids schedules I don't have time for a second job disguised as a game. GTA 4 multiplayer was perfect because you could jump in, make chaos for twenty minutes and log off. I hope GTA 6 keeps a mode that respects that kind of limited time. Give me an hour of dumb fun without missions telling me what to do.
