With GTA 6 delays, Take-Two CEO suggests Rockstar didn't want a Cyberpunk 2077 situation

So GamesRadar picked up on something Take-Two's CEO said about the GTA 6 delays, and the read they've got is pretty interesting. Zelnick apparently didn't name Cyberpunk 2077 directly, but the implication is loud enough that everyone knows what he's dancing around. The gist: Rockstar would rather pull the title and keep working than ship it and have to yank it afterward.

Which, yeah. If you were around for late 2020 you remember how that went for CDPR. Base console versions that barely ran, refunds getting offered by publishers who weren't CDPR, the whole thing pulled from a storefront. Nobody at Take-Two wants their biggest launch ever to be that story.

why this reads as a delay justification

This isn't Zelnick coming out and saying "we delayed it because of X." It's more of a general philosophy statement that happens to land while people are still chewing on the release date moving. Still, the framing is pretty transparent. He's basically telling investors the extra time is insurance, and that shipping something broken costs more than shipping something late.

And honestly? He's not wrong. A bad launch is permanent in a way a delay isn't. People forget a date. They don't forget a broken game.

the part that bugs me a little

My only gripe is that this kind of talk always sounds great in an earnings call and means nothing until the thing is actually in our hands. Every publisher says they'd rather delay. Then crunch hits, or a date gets locked by marketing, and suddenly the philosophy goes out the window. Take-Two has the luxury of a game that will sell regardless, so the calculus is easy for them.

Delays are cheap compared to a launch you can't take back.

Anyway, we're looking at November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S now, pre-orders have been live since June, and the Extended Look dropped back in August. So the runway is short at this point. If the extra time bought a cleaner day one, I'll take it.

Do you think the delays actually bought meaningful polish, or is this just CEO speak for a date that slipped for other reasons?
