Edge mag has an extra Q&A with Rockstar's QA lead, some pretty wild testing stories

There's a bonus interview tucked at the end of the EDGE magazine GTA 6 feature. It's with Phil Hooker, and he talks about how they actually test a game this size. Some of it is the kind of thing you'd expect, but a couple stories in there got me thinking about how deep the systems go.

He mentions two ways he plays: structured runs where they focus on specific content, and open plays where they just set a random objective and see what happens. One time they decided to get to Watson Bay using only public transport, just to make sure it all worked. That's the kind of test I'd love to watch.

The fun one is about robbing a store. He wanted to clear out witnesses before pulling the job, so he started picking fights with NPCs, provoking them, then immediately backing off and apologizing. They'd get annoyed and leave the store, and then he could rob it clean. He said he didn't actually get into a real fight, just that little dance to get them out. I never thought about using social systems like that, but it makes sense if the AI reacts to aggression and de-escalation.

There's also a bit about hiding on a bus. If the cops didn't see you get on, and you're out of the wanted area, why would they search the bus? He frames it as making sure the world feels logical. That's the stuff I'm hoping carries over from RDR2's witness system but with more depth.

He explains the QA structure too. They have specialists for features, a separate group for missions, and then overall testers. Each system gets tested on its own first, then they build up to playing naturally. He says they try to design systems with clear junction points so handoffs between them work. And he admits it's something they've been getting better at over the last couple projects, not something that comes easy.

Nothing groundbreaking about release or features, but I love hearing how they think about interconnected systems. The store witness trick makes me want to try stuff like that on day one. How much of that social manipulation do you think will actually work in the final game?
