The New Squadron 42 Trailer Looks Great, But That 2027 Release Date Is Hard To Believe

So Chris Roberts finally said the quiet part out loud. Squadron 42 got a new trailer and it looks genuinely solid. Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, Gillian Anderson, the whole cast is stacked. But the release date is now Q2 2027, and Roberts straight up said he doesn't want to launch into the "attention buzz saw" of GTA 6.

That quote is from a blog post earlier this year. He said even though GTA 6 isn't hitting PC this November, every outlet and content creator will be covering it anyway. So his 12 year Wing Commander spiritual successor would get buried. Hard to argue with that logic. We've already seen other games shuffle out of fall 2026.

The trailer itself mixes cinematics and gameplay. On-foot sections, life aboard the capital ship, minigames, space combat. They've been saying it's feature complete since 2023, just dialing in the feel. Now it's wishlistable on Steam and their site. Star Citizen has raised over a billion dollars, and a chunk of that is from selling ships that cost up to $5,000 each, which is its own whole thing.

I'm not a Star Citizen guy, but I get why Roberts is scared. GTA 6 is going to dominate everything from mid November through the holidays. No PC version doesn't matter when the console launch is that big. The only question is whether this is the last delay or if more games will bail on Q4 2026.

Do you think other studios will keep pushing their releases out of GTA 6's way, or is Squadron 42 just being extra cautious?
