Insider Gaming just posted something about Rockstar's NPC tech and it's got me thinking. The headline says it was prototyped as early as 2014. The actual article is basically nothing, just a teaser line and a link back to itself, so there's no real detail yet. But the headline alone is enough to get the imagination going.

2014 is a long time ago. That's when GTA V was still on PS3 and 360, and the PC version was still a year out. If Rockstar was already messing around with NPC behavior prototypes back then, that means this stuff has been in the oven for over a decade. That's not a small side project, that's a core piece of tech they've been refining through RDR2 and now GTA 6.

We've all seen the extended look from August. The NPCs in Leonida seem way more alive than anything in GTA V. People doing their own routines, reacting to the world, not just standing around waiting to be run over. If the foundation for that started in 2014, it explains why the jump feels so big. They didn't just bolt on some new AI last year, they've been building it for a while.

I'm curious what the prototype actually was. Insider Gaming didn't include any specifics, so I'm not going to pretend I know. Could be a patent, could be something from a former dev, could be a job listing that got dug up. Whatever it is, I hope they follow up with more because a headline like that without a body is frustrating.

Still, it's a reminder that Rockstar plays the long game with tech. They don't chase trends, they build systems and let them cook. If GTA 6's NPCs feel like a generational leap, it's because they've been working on it since before most of us even knew what a next gen console was.
