So TGG put out a video breaking down how robberies and money work in GTA 6, and someone on Twitter compiled the main points. I watched it myself to double check, and yeah it's all accurate. This is the kind of stuff I've been waiting to hear about since the extended look.

First off, the story can actually gate you behind money. Like, at certain points you'll need a certain amount of cash before the main missions continue. But instead of just handing you a mission to go earn it, the game leaves you to figure it out. Rob a store, hit a bank, whatever. That's a wild change from GTA 5 where money was basically meaningless until the end.

And any store can be robbed, not just the ones marked on the map. You can walk into some random corner shop and decide to stick it up. The game won't always tell you it's an option. Stores have security cameras, back entrances, safes, and NPCs who might try to stop you if they think they can. So even small robberies can go sideways.

Money is split into three types now. Banked money is safe, physical cash on you can be lost if you die, and stolen loot in duffel bags has to be fenced. Different fences handle different stuff, jewelry, drugs, vehicles. So you can't just instantly convert a stolen car into cash. You have to actually take it to the right person.

There's a whole tier system for free roam robberies. Small stores, jewelry stores, banks, gang compounds. Armored vans show up as smaller opportunities. Some bigger scores won't appear on the map at all, you have to hear about them from contacts or stumble onto them. When a known opportunity does show up, you get an estimate of the potential payout before you commit.

Gang compounds can be robbed for cash or drugs, and you can do them solo or with Jason or Lucia. Some safes need a code that you have to find inside the location or get from a contact. That's a nice touch, no more just blowing every safe open.

Rockstar also said they know GTA 5 gave you a ton of money near the end with nothing to spend it on. They're specifically trying to fix that. You can spend on clothes, hairstyles, makeup, headphones, vehicle customization, garages, registering stolen cars. But high end stolen vehicles might need story progression before you can register them. So there's a reason to keep earning.

Massive heists are back too, but TGG said it's unclear if those are open world or locked to story missions. I'm hoping they're free roam, but we'll see.

This all sounds like a much deeper economy than GTA 5. I'm curious how the cash loss on death will feel, especially early on. What do you all think about the story gating you behind money? Is that going to be annoying or actually make the game better?

Quick count from the list: four main robbery tiers, plus armored vans as a floating fifth, and three separate money states (banked, carried, fenced loot). GTA 5 had one marked-store interaction and a single cash pool. On the story gating question, it comes down to the threshold. Tuned low it reads as direction, tuned high it's a grind wall. We don't have those numbers yet.
