Thanks to a dedicated team 'art-directing' every single NPC, GTA 6 has over 10 times as many unique animations as GTA 5

PC Gamer dropped a number today that I still can't wrap my head around. GTA 6 has over 600,000 unique animations. More than ten times what GTA 5 had.

Rockstar has a dedicated team art directing every single NPC. That's the part that gets me. The main characters and mission givers are one thing. Every pedestrian, every background character, they all got individual attention. Someone sat there and made sure each one moves like an actual person.

I keep thinking about what that means for the world. Vice City is going to feel alive in a way we haven't seen before. Crowds on Ocean Drive, people in the Keys, folks in Port Gellhorn. All of them with their own little animations. Idle stances, reactions, the way they walk. It's the kind of detail you don't notice until it's missing, and then you can't unsee it.

GTA 5 had a solid NPC system for its time, but this is a different scale entirely. 600k animations is absurd. I don't even know how you store that, let alone make it all work on a PS5 without the thing melting.

Rockstar's been quiet about a lot of stuff, but this kind of number leaking out through PC Gamer tells me they're confident. You don't brag about animation counts unless the game actually delivers on it. November is going to be a problem for my free time.
