Take-Two wants IPs and phone numbers from Discord over GTA 6 leaks, Discord says not served yet
So Take-Two is really going after Discord now. PC Gamer is reporting that they're seeking IP addresses and phone numbers of thousands of users in a GTA 6 subpoena. Discord's response so far is basically "we haven't been served the order yet, and we'll evaluate the validity and scope before responding."
That's the whole quote from Discord. They're not saying they'll fight it, not saying they'll comply. Just that they haven't gotten the paperwork and they'll look at it when they do. Classic legal non-answer.
Take-Two has been on a tear with this stuff ever since the big leak. They've gone after modders, YouTubers, even tried to get info from other platforms. Now Discord is in the crosshairs. The subpoena apparently covers thousands of users, which is a lot. I get that they want to protect their game, but going after phone numbers feels like a step further than usual. IP addresses I can see, but phone numbers? That's personal.
Some people on here are saying it's justified because leaks hurt the devs and spoil the surprise. Others think it's overreach and Discord should tell them to pound sand. I'm kind of in the middle. Leaks are bad, but mass subpoenas for user data always make me nervous. Where does it stop?
Discord hasn't been served yet, so this could still go nowhere. Or it could turn into a huge legal fight. Either way, it's another reminder that Rockstar and Take-Two are not messing around with GTA 6 info. They've been quiet on the marketing front, but behind the scenes they're swinging hard.
I'll be watching to see if Discord actually gets served and what they do. If they push back, that could set a precedent for how platforms handle these gaming subpoenas. If they roll over, expect more of the same from Take-Two. My money's on them fighting it at least a little, because Discord has been pretty good about user privacy in the past. But money talks, and Take-Two has a lot of it.
