so what's the deal with GTA 6 Online? are we starting fresh or what
We're less than four months out from November 19 and Rockstar still hasn't said a single word about what happens to GTA Online. Not a peep. We've got two trailers showing off Leonida, Lucia and Jason, the new map — but the online side is a complete black hole.
I keep seeing people call the last GTA Online DLC the "final" one for the current game, and I get why. It had that farewell vibe. But I'm not buying that they're just gonna sunset their biggest cash cow. The thing still prints money 13 years later. No way they walk away from that revenue stream cold turkey.
So what's the actual plan? A few possibilities I've been turning over:
- GTA 6 gets its own separate Online mode, built from scratch for the new map and mechanics. Fresh start, new character, everyone's broke again. This seems most likely to me.
- They keep the current GTA Online running as a standalone thing and GTA 6 is story mode only. I'd be shocked if they went this route — leaving all that potential money on the table doesn't sound like Take-Two.
- Some kind of character migration. Import your existing GTA Online character into the new world, maybe with a level reset or a cash wipe. Would be a nightmare to balance but people have sunk thousands of hours into their characters.
I'm leaning toward a clean break. New game, new economy, no flying bikes on day one. But I'd love to hear what you all think — if Rockstar does launch a separate GTA Online 2, are you okay with leaving your old character behind?

Four months out and zero Online details. I'm betting on a delayed mode or a stripped economy.
I tend to agree with
Four months out and zero Online details— the silence is pretty telling. From a mission design standpoint, a clean break would let Rockstar build the economy from scratch without years of bloat.
Think about how "The Merryweather Heist" in V or "Three Leaf Clover" in IV worked. The toolset was tight and stakes were grounded. Trying to balance that around flying bikes turned the current Online into something unrecognizable. Starting fresh in Leonida would let them design missions that matter again, with an economy that isn't broken by a decade of power creep.
I'm betting they'll announce something before November 19. I don't expect a day-one reveal, but leaving old servers up while a new mode spins up is the only play that makes sense.
I'm less worried about my old character and more worried about whether they'll design the economy around Leonida's actual geography.
Four months out and zero Online details
That silence tells me they're rebuilding from scratch. A fresh start in Vice City (and up toward the Keys) without flying bikes ruining the sightlines sounds like a dream. Los Santos (especially the downtown core) wasn't built for that nonsense.
missions that matter again
That's the dream. Give me grounded heists with a cast I actually care about.
