Port Gellhorn's real-life inspirations were mostly destroyed by Hurricane Michael

Was digging into the real places Rockstar used for Port Gellhorn and it's kind of wild how much of it doesn't exist anymore. They scouted Panama City, Florida back in 2015 for a lot of the buildings. Then in 2018, Hurricane Michael came through and absolutely wrecked the area. Over 45,000 structures damaged, hundreds of millions in losses. So a bunch of the spots that ended up in the game are just gone now.

The Crossroad Park Minimall from Trailer 2 is a perfect example. That's based on the Callaway Village Square mall in Panama City. The real place got hammered by Michael and was eventually demolished. Now there's a CEFCO gas station sitting where it used to be. So when we're cruising through Port Gellhorn in the game, we'll be seeing a version of that mall that hasn't existed in years.

It's kind of cool to think about. The game is going to be a time capsule of mid-2010s Florida Panhandle. All those scouting trips Rockstar did in 2015 are basically preserving a place that nature wiped off the map. I'm not even from Florida but it makes me appreciate the level of detail they put into this stuff. They didn't just copy what's there now, they built the world from what they saw back then and stuck with it.

That's a haunting detail. It might make Port Gellhorn feel stranger once we're actually walking around, knowing those storefronts are just memories now. I wonder if Rockstar kept any of the post-Michael damage in the texture work, or if they polished everything back to a 2015 snapshot.

It raises a weird question about how games preserve places. Liberty City isn't NYC, but Port Gellhorn seems pretty close to its source material. Could be cool if some of the aging or wear on buildings hints at that history, though I could be wrong and it's just standard grunge.

Did they scout any other Panhandle spots that got hit later? I'm curious if the Grassrivers or Keys areas have similar ghost architecture hiding in them.
