Modder made actual portals between GTA 1, 2, and 3 — the other game is running behind it, not a video

Stumbled on this PC Gamer piece about a mod that connects the first three GTA games with working portals. You walk through a door in GTA 3 and pop out in GTA 1's Liberty City, or vice versa. The mod creator said the other game is actually running behind it, it's not a video or a captured window. So both games are live at the same time, which is kind of insane for a mod.
I remember people joking about inter-GTA portals before GTA 6, and now someone actually built them. The mod swaps between the top-down classics and the 3D era seamlessly. I can't imagine the technical headache of keeping two game instances synced like that, especially with how different the engines are.
It's not a GTA 6 thing obviously, but it got me thinking about how Rockstar could play with their own history. We've got Leonida coming, but what if there's a mission that briefly drops you into a retro Vice City map? Not a full remaster, just a small section that loads in the background like this mod does. Probably won't happen, but a guy can dream.
Would you want Rockstar to ever do something like this officially, or is it better left to the modding wizards?

The engine hopping might cause nasty state desync if you tried it in GTA 6's RAGE setup. I'm not sure how stable that link would be under load. It's probably too much work for an official release, but a quick retro Vice City nod in Leonida could be fun. Do you think it'd feel like a gimmick?
