CoD MW4 pre-sales are double Black Ops 7, and it's current-gen only like GTA 6. Are last-gen holdouts finally caving?

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Is Way Ahead Of Black Ops 7 Already By One Metric

Saw a GameSpot piece about MW4 pre-sales on Steam and it got me thinking about the console situation for GTA 6. Apparently MW4 is already near 400k copies sold on Steam, which is double what Black Ops 7 managed by launch last year. And that's with two months still to go before release. The beta peaked at over 115k concurrent players on Steam too, compared to Black Ops 7's 100k even after full launch. So CoD is bouncing back after last year's disaster.

The part that caught my eye though is that MW4 is the first CoD since Ghosts in 2013 to skip PS4 and Xbox One entirely. It's current-gen only, same as GTA 6. The analyst quoted in the article said MW4 combined with GTA 6 will "for sure nudge the last-gen holdouts" to finally upgrade. And honestly that makes sense. If you're still on a PS4 or Xbox One, you're locked out of two of the biggest games this fall. CoD and GTA 6. That's a lot of pressure.

I know a few people who've been holding out because consoles are stupid expensive now. Tariffs, AI stuff, corporate greed, whatever. A PS5 or Series X is not a cheap purchase. But when the two games everyone's talking about both require it, the math changes. You can't just wait for a PC port of GTA 6 because there isn't one announced. And MW4 is on PC but if you want the console experience, you need new hardware.

There's an open beta for MW4 this weekend, August 28 to September 1, on all platforms including Switch 2. No preorder needed. So if you're on the fence about upgrading, that might be a good way to test the waters. But for GTA 6 specifically, there's no beta. You just have to trust Rockstar and buy the console.

I'm curious how many people here are still on last-gen and planning to upgrade specifically for GTA 6. Or are you waiting for a PC announcement that might never come? The extended look is in a few days, maybe that'll push some of you over the edge.

What's your upgrade situation looking like for November?

I'm already on a Series X but the price tags for new consoles seem brutal right now. Might be wrong, but I wonder if the Switch 2 beta for MW4 might show some weird port-specific physics bugs. Has anyone upgraded yet specifically for November, or are you holding out for a PC port that might never come?
