Rockstar's staying quiet on GTA 6 Online for now, and that's probably smart

So Gamespot had a piece today basically confirming what a lot of us already suspected. Rockstar isn't going to breathe a word about GTA 6's online mode anytime soon. Jason Schreier said on a podcast that Take-Two is only talking about the single-player portion right now, and they're not planning to discuss what the new GTA Online looks like or how the recurring revenue will work.
Makes sense when you look at the pre-order page. They're calling it a "single-player experience" and there's zero mention of multiplayer. For a company that's been printing money with GTA Online for over a decade, that's a pretty deliberate choice.
I get why some people are scratching their heads. GTA Online still pulls in something like $500 million a year even now, 13 years after launch. You'd think they'd want to hype up the next version. But honestly, I think they're playing this exactly right. The single-player is what built the franchise's reputation, and after all the online-only rumors that were flying around before the first trailer, they probably want to make it crystal clear that story mode is the foundation.
There's also the messy question of what happens to the current GTA Online. Do they sunset it? Keep it running alongside the new one? Force everyone to start over? Whatever they decide, a chunk of the playerbase is gonna be furious. Better to let the single-player marketing do its thing and deal with the online transition later.
We'll get the next big info drop on August 27 with that extended look on Netflix. I'm betting it's all story and gameplay, no online teaser. And that's fine by me. Let them show us why Leonida is worth exploring before they try to sell us shark cards again.
