PC Gamer thinks GTA 6 won't fix the industry's mess, and I kinda agree

What happens after GTA 6?

Saw a piece on PC Gamer today that got me thinking. They're asking what happens after GTA 6, and their take is basically: the industry is in such a weird spot right now that Rockstar's big one won't create chaos, but it won't calm things down either. Just a massive event that comes and goes while everything else keeps burning.

I mean, look around. Layoffs every other week, studios getting shuttered, games delayed into 2027 because nobody wants to launch anywhere near November 19th. We've already seen Attack on Titan 3 and Fire Emblem's Direct tiptoeing around that date. The whole calendar is bending around GTA 6, but the underlying problems aren't going away. Consolidation, ballooning budgets, live service fatigue. A single game, even one this huge, doesn't fix that.

And on the flip side, it's not like GTA 6 is going to make things worse. The chaos is already here. The industry's been in flux for years. If anything, a record breaking launch might give publishers the wrong lesson, like "see, just spend a decade and $2 billion and you'll be fine." But that's not new either.

So yeah, probably neither. The game will sell 20 million copies in a week, we'll all disappear into Leonida for months, and when we come up for air the same headlines will be waiting. What do you think, does GTA 6 change anything long term or is it just a temporary distraction?

Nov 19 is 105 days out. We've got two trailers (Dec 2023, May 2025) and two pre-order tiers at $79.99 and $99.99. The calendar shifting around one release date is measurable. Attack on Titan 3 and Fire Emblem moving are just two data points in a wider avoidance pattern. Six named areas in Leonida, two protagonists. None of that fixes a studio's payroll spreadsheet or stops a live service from sunsetting. It's a temporary gravity well. Record sales figures won't rehire anyone. The math on consolidation and ballooning budgets is separate from whatever GTA 6 moves in its first week.

"temporary gravity well"

Exactly. I'm just waiting to see if Ambrosia is actually southwest of Port Gellhorn (or cut off by water). Industry layoffs don't change whether the Grassrivers marshland has hidden airfields. Map density is my only metric.
