GTA 6 download codes in Japan expire after 170 days — that's barely 5 months

VGC is reporting that digital download codes for GTA 6 in Japan will only be valid for 170 days after launch. That's less than six months. For a game that's probably going to be on shelves for a decade, that feels weirdly short.

I get that codes have expiration dates to prevent fraud or whatever, but 170 days is nothing. Most people buying a code as a gift or from a third-party seller aren't going to redeem it the second they get it. And if you're importing a Japanese copy for some reason, you'd better not let it sit in a drawer.

Maybe it's tied to some local regulation? Or maybe Rockstar Japan is just being extra cautious about resellers. Either way, it's a good reminder to actually redeem your codes instead of hoarding them. I've still got a few PSN cards from 2018 that I'm pretty sure are still good.

Not a huge deal for most of us, but if you're planning to grab a code from a Japanese storefront, keep an eye on that clock.
