GTA 6 boss says "there will always be things to satirize," but Rockstar has to "be careful about what we pick" because after 11 years of development "it could be gone, it could change, it could be dated"

The game's been in some form of development since 2015, but most of the team didn't actually join until Red Dead Redemption 2 wrapped in 2018. That's a long runway.

The boss talked about satire and how they have to be careful what they pick. There will always be things to satirize, but after 11 years of development, a joke could be gone, it could change, it could be dated. That's the quote basically.

Makes sense. GTA has always been about poking fun at the moment, but if you write a joke about some 2024 meme and the game comes out in 2026, it's already dead. They probably have to aim for stuff that's more timeless or at least flexible. Florida itself gives them plenty of material that doesn't really expire, so I'm not too worried.

I'm glad they're thinking about this. The last thing we need is a game full of dated references that were funny in 2020. I'd rather they lean into the absurdity of Leonida itself. Chasing whatever's trending right now is a losing game. That stuff ages better anyway.

Weird edge case to think about: could they just patch the satire after launch? Radio chatter, billboards, TV bits, those are all swappable assets in theory. I don't remember Rockstar ever doing that for GTA 5's single player, could be wrong though. Seems like the long dev cycle might actually push them toward it, otherwise half the jokes are fighting a clock the moment they're written.
