GTA 6 lets you break up Jason and Lucia, and we can thank Red Dead Redemption 2 for that

Saw GamesRadar put up a piece about this and it got me thinking. They're saying GTA 6 will let you break Jason and Lucia up if that's how you want to play it. Not as a fail state, but as a legitimate choice. That feels like a shift for Rockstar.

Their whole angle is asking what if these two characters want different things. It's not about the story forcing a romance on you. If you decide they're better off apart, apparently the game can roll with that. I don't know if that means a full branching storyline or just a relationship meter that can bottom out, but the fact it's even on the table is interesting.

The article credits Red Dead Redemption 2 for this. Arthur Morgan wasn't a blank slate, but you could shape him. High honor, low honor, different endings, different reactions from the gang. Rockstar clearly learned they could give a protagonist real moral weight without breaking the narrative. Now it sounds like they're doing the same thing with the Lucia and Jason dynamic. Instead of one canonical relationship, you get to decide what kind of couple they are, if they even stay a couple.

I'm curious how that interacts with the four point couple rating that got talked about before. If you can raise it by walking on the beach or hitting the gym together, then maybe you can also tank it on purpose. Like just stop doing those things, make choices that push them apart. If Rockstar actually commits to that, it could make replays feel way different. One run they're ride or die, next run they barely tolerate each other.

Not going to lie, I'll probably keep them together on my first playthrough. But the idea that the game won't fight me if I want the opposite is a good sign. Rockstar's usually pretty rigid about story beats, so this feels like them loosening up. If they pulled it off without making one path feel like the "wrong" one, that's a big swing.
