sensor tower says gta 6 preorders already at $429 million, 4.38 million copies

Saw this on GameSpot and figured it was worth a thread. Sensor Tower has a sales tracker for GTA 6 and they're claiming Rockstar already moved 4.38 million copies through August 18, including returns. That works out to $429 million in revenue. The split is 77% PS5 and 23% Xbox Series X|S.
Now, this isn't official. Take-Two hasn't released a number and their CEO said they won't because it could be misleading. But they did call preorders "unprecedented across the industry." So the third party estimate probably isn't far off.
Preorders opened June 25. Standard is $80, Ultimate is $100. And apparently more people are grabbing the $100 edition, which is wild. I remember when GTA 5 launched at $60 back in 2013. Adjusted for inflation that's like $85 now, so the $80 standard isn't crazy, but the Ultimate being the popular one says a lot about how much people are willing to drop on this game.
One analyst thinks GTA 6 could hit 25 million preorders by launch. That would be around $2 billion in revenue, enough to cover the dev budget and most of the marketing. And the real marketing push hasn't even started yet. The August 27 extended look on Netflix is supposed to kick that off.
I'm not shocked by any of this. The hype has been building for years and the two trailers did their job. But I'm still holding off on preordering until I see that extended look. If it shows enough new stuff, I might cave and go Ultimate. Otherwise I'll just grab the standard edition a week before launch like a normal person.
