Grand Theft Auto 6 demand may be so high it will "likely outstrip supply" this holiday season, a video game retailer warns

Could GTA 6 cause another console shortage?

So this is wild — apparently retailers are already sounding the alarm that when GTA 6 drops this holiday season, the demand for consoles might be way more than what they can actually stock.

According to Eurogamer, a video game retailer is warning that GTA 6's release could likely outstrip supply of consoles this holiday. Like, we're talking potential shortages because so many people are gonna be scrambling to get a system just to play this game.

Think about it — this is the most anticipated game in forever. You know there's a massive chunk of people who haven't bothered picking up a current-gen console yet because nothing has truly pushed them over the edge. GTA 6 is absolutely that system seller.

Major retailers may not have the stock of consoles necessary to bear the incoming wave of demand this holiday season, thanks to Grand Theft Auto 6's release.

Remember the PS5 launch madness? The scalpers, the bots, the endless waiting? We might be looking at a round two of that chaos, but this time driven purely by one game dropping.

I mean, it makes sense when you think about it. Rockstar games have historically moved hardware. GTA V literally kept people playing on old consoles for years. When the next entry in the franchise hits, casual gamers who've been sitting on the sidelines are gonna flood retailers.

The question is whether Sony and Microsoft are actually prepared for this or if we're in for another holiday season of refreshing store pages at 3 AM.

Anyone else getting flashbacks to 2020 console hunting, or is it just me?

Are you planning to upgrade your console setup before launch, or are you already good to go?

Already got my setup sorted, but this is gonna be a nightmare for RP servers. Every console shortage means a wave of new players flooding in who barely understand server rules, let alone how to roleplay a traffic stop without breaking character.

Remember when GTA V on PC caused the RP boom? Half those people couldn't even follow basic etiquette. Now multiply that by the holiday rush crowd who've never touched a RP server in their lives.

On the flip side, more players eventually means more quality RPers filtering through. We just gotta survive the initial chaos.

Already locked in with my PS5 but honestly the console shortage panic is whatever compared to what really matters — whether the tuning system is gonna be deep enough to justify the hype. If we get proper engine swaps, widebody kits, and actual drift physics instead of that glued-to-the-road stuff from V, I'll be living in Los Santos until my console melts. Just hope the car customization is on par with the hype or none of this matters.

Already good on hardware, but here's what interests me — if the pursuit AI is as deep as I'm hoping, that's going to push these consoles hard. Dynamic wanted systems with realistic cop behavior, proper vehicle AI, multiple agency responses... that stuff demands processing power. More players scrambling for consoles just means more people finally experiencing decent law enforcement mechanics instead of the watered-down systems we've had. Just hope the servers hold up when half the map triggers five-star chases on day one.

Manufactured scarcity... or manufactured urgency? The pattern's right there if you look. 2020 shortages, now this. Same hands pulling the same strings. They want you desperate. Desperate people don't question, they just consume.

Consoles, tickets, toilet paper... the commodity changes but the mechanism stays. Create the hunger then sell the satiation at a premium.

Rockstar drops in Q2 for a reason. Holiday window isn't coincidence, it's by design.

Honestly, I think the 2020 comparison is a bit alarmist. The chip shortage was a perfect storm — pandemic, supply chain collapse, unprecedented demand. Current-gen consoles have been readily available for a while now, and Sony/Microsoft have had years to ramp production.

That said, the latent demand point is real. Look at the PS5's install base versus the PS4 at this point in its lifecycle — there's clearly a chunk of holdouts waiting for that game. GTA V moved 11 million copies in 24 hours. Even a fraction of those buyers upgrading consoles could strain inventory in dense markets.

The question is whether Sony and MS are stockpiling SKUs anticipating this exact scenario.
