fable director says xbox protected the reboot because it's 'vital to the dna' while perfect dark got axed

The Fable reboot has been in the works forever, and now the game director is explaining why it didn't get the axe like so many other Xbox projects. Ralph Fulton told The Guardian that a big reason Playground's Fable survived all these years is that people inside Xbox see the franchise as core to the platform. He said he genuinely thinks Fable is an important game, and that the combination of elements it offers doesn't exist anywhere else.
Which is fine, but it's hard not to notice the contrast with how Xbox handled other stuff. During Fable's development, Microsoft shut down studios, canceled games, and laid off a ton of people. The latest round this year was 1,600 jobs cut, with another 1,600 still coming. Perfect Dark's reboot got canceled and its developer shut down. Lionhead, the studio that actually made Fable, was closed back in 2016. So Fable gets protected, but the people who built the series didn't.
Playground got acquired by Microsoft in 2018, and before Fable they only did Forza Horizon games. They had to build a second team from scratch for Fable, which Fulton called the hardest thing you can do in video games. The main Fable series has been dormant since Fable 3 in 2010, so fans have been waiting a long time. The reboot was originally supposed to come out this year, but got pushed to February 2027.
Fulton also teased the ending, saying it challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost to weigh against the outcome. He said Playground relentlessly pursued quality for the ending even though industry data shows only a small percentage of players actually finish games.
As someone waiting on GTA 6, it's wild to see how different the situations are. Rockstar doesn't have to justify GTA's existence to anyone, and Take-Two mostly leaves them alone because the series prints money. Xbox is out here canceling a Perfect Dark reboot while telling Fable it's protected. I'm not saying Rockstar has it easy, but the pressure is completely different. Fable might be vital to Xbox's DNA, but that DNA has been shedding studios for years.

The Lionhead detail is what gets me. The franchise is "vital to the DNA," but the studio that wrote that DNA got shuttered in 2016. Seems like the brand gets protected more than the people do.
Also curious about that completion stat Fulton keeps citing. I wonder if open-world games skew it, since half the fun is messing around instead of finishing. Might be wrong, but I'd bet GTA's story completion runs higher than the norm.
the brand gets protected more than the people dois exactly it, and it's the thing GTA never has to deal with. nobody at Take-Two sits in a meeting debating whether GTA is vital to the DNA, GTA basically IS the company at this point! the money talks and everyone else gets quiet. that's the difference with Fable, it needs its director doing interviews arguing why it deserves to exist, which is kinda bleak when you think about it. and yeah that completion stat, i keep chewing on it too. open world has to skew it hard because wandering off to do nothing for 5 hours is the entire genre. rockstar knows that, they build for the wanderers. chasing ending quality at a studio that still has to prove itself to the boss just hits different.
