The marketing campaign already started, you're just looking for the wrong thing

I work in marketing so I figured I'd throw in my two cents on all the 'where's the marketing' posts. People keep comparing this to GTA V and that's exactly the problem.

GTA V had a 22-month campaign. Magazine covers, slow drip of info, TV spots. That was 2011-2013. Reach was expensive and attention was fragmented. You had to build it over time. GTA 6 has five months. Zelnick basically said the plan reflects how audiences work now. It's not less effort, it's a completely different shape. More concentrated, less stretched out.

And the campaign already started. Pre-orders are live, cover art's out, price is confirmed, editions are announced, we got new screenshots. That's the funnel being built. The creative peak, the big trailer, the billboards, the crazy stunts, nobody drops those four months before launch. That's a waste.

Awareness is already at 100% for the audience that matters. Trailer 1 did 200 million views. Trailer 2 broke records. Rockstar doesn't need to buy awareness. Every dollar goes to the bottom of the funnel in the final six weeks, where it actually converts pre-orders. Spending now would be paying to tell people something they already know.

Timing isn't random either. You don't buy media during a World Cup summer and peak holiday season. Attention is elsewhere, costs are inflated, half of Europe is on a beach. Waiting is just cheaper and smarter.

And here's the uncomfortable part: this thread, all the speculation, the YouTube breakdowns, the subreddit theories, that IS the marketing. The silence generates more discussion than any trailer would. We're doing the work for free. The day we stop talking is the day they start spending.

So yeah, you'll get your trailer, your billboards, probably some unhinged real-life stunt. Just not on a 2013 schedule. My bet is the real push kicks off first half of August. Until then, the hype machine is running just fine without them.

ok so the june 25 pre-order drop with the vintage vice city pack basically was the opening salvo. we're already inside the campaign.
