devolver is dropping a $5 game boy style platformer on gta 6 day and honestly it looks like a nice palate cleanser
GameSpot has a piece up about Devolver Digital deciding to launch something on November 19, same day as GTA 6. The game is called Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed and the whole pitch is a joke. They're calling it a remaster of the second remake of an original monochrome action platformer starring the most famous video game mascot of all time. None of that is true. The original game doesn't exist, it's not a remaster, and Volvy is Devolver's own weird mascot, not exactly Mario.
What it actually is: a Game Boy Color style 2D platformer from Doinksoft, the studio behind Gato Roboto and Gunbrella. It's $5 on Steam. Volvy is this rat looking thing with one big hand and one small hand. He dashes, jumps, collects onions, bounces on enemies, fights bosses. There's also a transformation where he becomes Swolvy, a hulked out version that smashes through stuff.
The trailer shows off some movement tech. Volvy can dash through the air with his giant fist, burrow underground, and hover like a helicopter using his tail. You can chain all of that together, which looks genuinely fun. The art style is bright and the soundtrack pops. It's very much a love letter to that GBC era.
I know GTA 6 is going to dominate everything that week. It's $80 or $100 depending on edition and it's not on PC at launch. So a $5 platformer is pretty solid counterprogramming for anyone who wants something lighter. Devolver isn't the only one either. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance+ Online is also dropping November 19 with online co-op.
I'll probably grab Volvy's Adventure for the price of a coffee. It won't pull me away from Leonida for long, but it's a nice little thing to have on the side while the servers melt and everyone's trying to download the game.

Five bucks for tight platforming while everyone else melts the servers heading toward Vice City. Decent counterprogramming. (Makes me think of Los Santos. All that north county sprawl, but the best easter eggs were crammed into tiny back corners.) I'll grab it for the novelty alone.
