You can upgrade the $80 GTA 6 to the Ultimate Edition later for 20 bucks

Spotted this over on GameSpot and it's the kind of thing I wish more publishers would just put front and center. If you grab the standard $79.99 version and later decide you want the Ultimate Edition goodies, Rockstar's selling a separate Ultimate Edition Upgrade for $20. Same total either way.

What I like is that it works across the board. Digital copies from the PlayStation or Xbox stores, and the code-in-a-box physical version too. So nobody gets locked out because they bought a disc. That's been a mess with other games, where the physical crowd gets treated like second class citizens.

what the extra 20 actually gets you

The $99.99 Ultimate Edition isn't sold in stores, digital only. It comes with a pile of extras: vehicles, weapons, and clothing for Jason and Lucia. According to Rockstar's support page, those items are woven through the whole story rather than dumped on you at the start, with new stuff unlocking behind each chapter. I'm into that. Better than a bunch of overpowered junk sitting in your garage on day one.

You also get access to in-game businesses that standard buyers don't get, and that list includes a hair salon, a tattoo parlor, and a mod shop. The salon one is funny to me. Twenty dollars for a haircut in a video game, but it's really about the whole package of shops and gear.

the preorder stuff is separate

Worth being clear: every preorder, standard or ultimate, comes with the Vintage Vice City Pack and a month of GTA+. So you're not missing the preorder bonus by going cheap up front.

I'm going standard and keeping the 20 in my pocket for now. If the chapter unlocks turn out to be worth it once people get hands on, I can always flip the switch later. That flexibility is the whole point.
