Former Rockstar Games tech director thinks GTA 6 could be coming to PC sooner than you'd expect to curb AI clones

Saw a Eurogamer piece where Obbe Vermeij, ex-technical director at Rockstar North, floated an interesting one: the threat of AI-made ports of GTA 6 might actually get Rockstar to put out a proper PC version quicker than we'd assume.

His logic is that once the game's out in the wild, people with enough know-how (and modern AI tooling) could hack together their own playable PC builds. If that starts happening, Rockstar would rather have the real thing on shelves than let a bunch of janky clones spread around.

Why this lands for me

We've got no PC version announced, just PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19. That's the part that stings for anyone without a console. So hearing a guy who actually shipped GTA games say the PC gap might close faster than expected is at least something to chew on.

I don't fully buy that AI changes the calculus though. Rockstar's PC ports have always been their own beast, and the decision probably comes down to how much work the port needs and how much money they think they're leaving on the table, not fear of some modder's franken-build. Still, Vermeij knows the inside of that studio better than anyone posting here, so I'm not going to wave it off.

AI clone ports as a reason to move fast. That's a new one on me.

What I'd actually want to know is whether "sooner than you'd expect" means months after launch or a year. Those are very different waits. My gut says we're still looking at a long stretch, and the smart move is to plan around the console version if you can. But a small part of me is now watching for any hint of a PC announcement in the months after November.

Either way, it's a fun angle from a guy who's been there. Take it as speculation, not a roadmap.
