HDR might be the sleeper graphical upgrade for GTA 6
I keep coming back to HDR when I think about how GTA 6 will look. The trailers already look insane, but we haven't seen a single frame in HDR. Trailers never really show that off, so it's understandable. But man, Vice City at night with neon everywhere, the sun blasting off the ocean, headlights cutting through rain. That's exactly the kind of scene HDR was made for.
RDR2's HDR was a mess at launch. Washed out, weird black levels, people argued about it for months. Rockstar eventually patched it but it never felt like a showcase feature. GTA 5 Enhanced on consoles has HDR too, and I honestly can't tell the difference half the time. I'm on an OLED and it just looks like a slightly brighter version of the same game. Nothing that made me go "oh yeah, this is why I bought this TV."
So I'm wondering if Rockstar actually cares about HDR this time around. GTA 6 is their first game built from the ground up for current gen consoles, and both PS5 and Series X support HDR properly. The lighting engine they've shown in the trailers, the way sunlight bounces around, the volumetric stuff, all of that should translate really well to HDR if they do it right. But doing it right is the hard part. Plenty of big budget games still ship with mediocre HDR because it's an afterthought.
I'd love to see them go beyond the typical implementation. Maybe dynamic tone mapping that adjusts per scene, or proper metadata so it doesn't clip highlights. The difference between a game with good HDR and bad HDR is night and day, and GTA 6 has so many high contrast moments that a half-assed job would be really noticeable. Imagine driving through the Keys at sunset and the sky just looks flat because the highlights are blown out. That would suck.
I don't expect them to talk about HDR in the extended look later this month. They'll probably focus on gameplay and story stuff. But I'm hoping when the game finally drops, HDR is one of those things that quietly makes everything look better without you having to fiddle with settings. Rockstar has the resources to nail it, they just need to treat it as a priority instead of a checkbox.
That's my take anyway. HDR won't be the headline feature, but it could be the thing that makes the game feel next gen in a way screenshots can't capture.
