Xbox Series X|S Is Getting A Surprise Graphics Boost From AMD

AMD just dropped some news that might actually matter for how GTA 6 runs on Xbox. FSR 4.1 is coming to Series X|S "soon" according to Microsoft and AMD. It's their machine learning based temporal upscaler, similar idea to what Sony's been doing with PSSR and QSSR on PS5. Render lower, upscale higher, get better image quality without tanking performance.

Now before anyone gets carried away, the Series consoles don't have dedicated ML hardware like the PS5 Pro does. So this won't magically turn a Series S into a Pro killer. But if devs implement it right, it could still be a solid bump in clarity and frame stability. The Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet made a whole video about it, talking up the AMD partnership and saying FSR 4.1 is coming to current gen and also to Project Helix, whatever that ends up being.

The catch is the same one we've seen with PS5's QSSR. Games don't just get FSR 4.1 automatically. Developers have to go in and patch support manually. Capcom built Pragmata around FSR 1 on Xbox, running 720p on Series S and 1080p on Series X. That kind of thing doesn't update itself. On PS5, only Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei are confirmed for QSSR so far. So adoption is slow and uneven.

With GTA 6 launching in a few weeks, Rockstar hasn't said a word about using any of these upscalers. No PSSR, no QSSR, no FSR 4.1. If they don't patch it in, this news is just a spec sheet bullet point for now. But if Rockstar does support it on Xbox, that could shift the "best console to play GTA 6 on" conversation. Right now the PS5 Pro has the raw GPU advantage, but a well implemented FSR 4.1 on Series X might close some of that gap in image quality.

AMD also mentioned FSR 4.1 support for RX 6000 cards, some Ryzen laptops, and handhelds like the ROG Ally stuff. That's cool for PC folks eventually, but no PC version of GTA 6 announced so far, so console is where it matters at launch.

Anyone else wondering if Rockstar will bother with upscaling tech at launch or just brute force native res like they usually do?
