half-life 2 hacker got probation, gta 6 leaker might too if they're german
Someone on reddit brought up the Alex Gembe case from 2003 and it's a pretty wild precedent. This German kid hacked into Valve's servers, grabbed the unreleased Half-Life 2 beta, and shared it around. Valve was furious, obviously. They wanted to get him to the US so they could throw the book at him. But German police got to him first. And German law is way more lenient for this kind of thing. He ended up with 2 years probation. No prison time, no extradition.
So if the GTA 6 leaker happens to be German, and there's been some speculation about that, the same thing could play out. Germany doesn't extradite its own citizens to the US. There's no extradition treaty between the two countries for that kind of case. So the whole "life in prison" or "death penalty" talk people throw around is probably not happening. At worst, if they're German and get caught in Germany, they might get a few years, maybe probation again.
I'm not saying the leaker is definitely German. But it's worth remembering that not every country treats this stuff the same way the US does. The US legal system is brutal for hackers and leakers, but other places are way more chill. So all the doomposting about the leaker getting destroyed might be overblown if they're outside US jurisdiction.
Anyway, just thought it was an interesting comparison. The Valve kid got off easy, and that was 20 years ago. Laws haven't exactly gotten harsher in Germany for this kind of thing.
