colored pencil drawing of lucia and jason, background was a nightmare so i cut them out

Spent way too long on this one but figured I'd share it here. I've been working on a drawing of Lucia and Jason for a bit and it did not go smoothly at all.

First mistake was the paper. I grabbed this really smooth sheet thinking it'd be fine for colored pencils but it just doesn't take the pigment the same way. Everything kept smearing and blending weird. The characters themselves eventually turned out decent, I was actually happy with how their faces and outfits came together.

Then I went to do the background and completely wrecked it. Like, unsalvageable. So I did the only thing that made sense at that point. I literally cut Lucia and Jason out with scissors and glued them onto a fresh sheet, then drew a whole new background behind them. And honestly that new background isn't great either. It's better than the first attempt but still not what I pictured.

Some parts of the drawing I'm really proud of, like Lucia's hair and the shading on Jason's jacket. Other parts I just have to accept are what they are. It's a weird mix of good and bad but I'm done messing with it.

Anyone else here do traditional art for GTA stuff? What kind of paper do you actually use for colored pencils because I clearly need to switch it up before November.
