Shrek 2 remaster just got announced with a GTA-style trailer and I can't stop laughing
So Aspyr is doing a remaster of the Shrek 2 game from 2004, and the announcement trailer is apparently a straight up GTA parody. Like the camera angles, the font, the whole vibe. It's coming out next month apparently.
I saw the thumbnail floating around and thought it was a joke at first. But no, it's real. Shrek 2 remastered with a trailer that looks like it's trying to be a Rockstar reveal. I don't know if that's brilliant or desperate, but either way I respect the hustle.
For anyone who never played the original, it was actually a decent licensed platformer. You could switch between Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and a few others. It had co-op. It wasn't groundbreaking but it was fun for what it was. A remaster in 2026 feels random, but I guess everything gets remastered eventually.
The GTA parody angle is what got me though. You'd think they'd go for a more fairy tale aesthetic, but instead they're leaning into the whole "open world crime saga" energy. I'm not complaining. It's the kind of absurdity that makes gaming fun.
I'm not saying I'll buy it day one, but if it's cheap enough and the co-op still works, I might grab it for a weekend. Sometimes you just need something dumb and nostalgic. And the fact that it's being marketed like a GTA game while we're all waiting for actual GTA 6 is just perfect timing.
Anyway, thought some of you would get a kick out of this. The trailer's out there if you search for it. Not linking anything because I don't want to deal with whatever weird licensing stuff is going on, but it's easy to find. Shrek 2 remaster, GTA trailer, next month. What a time to be alive.
