the little jason moments i keep rewatching from the extended look

I've seen a lot of people call Jason bland after the extended look, and I get why on a surface level. Lucia does most of the talking and she's the one with the big reactions. But I went back through the preview and there's a ton of small stuff Jason does that builds a pretty specific personality.

The handoff scene with Raymond is the best example. Jason clocks that something's off almost immediately. He does this little hand gesture, like "we're just here to collect," and it reads as irritation more than anything. He wants the whole thing to move along without drama. Then when Raymond starts explaining the situation, Jason's head drops. He already knows where this is going. Lucia can say what she's feeling out loud, but Jason's body language is doing all the work for him.

There's a moment where he asks "boobie knows all this right" and he's not even looking at Raymond when he says it. He only glances over after. That's disinterest and a little bit of impatience. He's trying to fast forward to the part where this stops being their problem.

The elevator button mashing got a laugh out of me, but it's also a clear tell. He's anxious. The sigh of relief from both of them when the door closes says everything. And then there's the "you'd miss me?" line with the smirk. He does have a sense of humor, it just comes out in the right moments instead of all the time. I actually think Jason gets more of those little funny remarks than Lucia in the whole preview, but I'd have to rewatch to be sure.

The chauffeur bit is another one. You can see he hates being the glorified uber driver for these people, but he does it because he has to. That quiet resentment is way more interesting to me than if he was just a generic tough guy.

What ties it all together is how often he says "huh" or "what" when someone talks to him. That's a processing thing, not him being slow. I do the same thing, not because I didn't hear you, but because I need a second to make sure I got everything right. Jason seems like he's in his own head a lot, thinking things through instead of reacting out loud like Lucia. So he comes across as flat if you're not paying attention, but the little stuff is all there.

As someone who's pretty socially awkward myself, a lot of his mannerisms feel familiar. If Rockstar actually commits to that, he might end up being one of the better depictions of an introvert in a game this size.

The "huh" and "what" processing detail is what sells it for me. That's a deliberate writing choice, not a voice actor filling dead air. If they hold that across a 50-plus hour campaign plus side content, it compounds. One cutscene of it reads flat. Two hundred scripted moments of it becomes a fully realized character.

My one reservation: I want to see whether it survives outside missions. Niko was phenomenal in cinematics and close to a blank slate in free roam. The completionist question is whether Jason's mannerisms carry through the 100% grind, or whether they're locked to story beats. That's the difference between a good protagonist and a great one.
