gta 6 tone check, realism vs the old dark comedy

Been thinking about this since the extended look hit Netflix. GTA IV definitely felt like it pulled back on the goofy stuff. I remember the fast food joints in San Andreas being hilarious, and then IV came along and everything got a lot more serious. Maybe I just missed the jokes, but it didn't have that same dark comedy energy from the III era.

GTA V brought it back hard though. The radio DJs alone had me cracking up, and the side missions had that weird mix of stupid and dark that Rockstar does best. The blackmail stuff with the celebrity stand-in was peak GTA humor for me.

From what people have been breaking down from the Netflix reveal, GTA 6 looks like it's leaning heavy on realism. But there are little satirical touches tucked in there too. The strip club ads on the beach, the way Lucia and Jason's dialogue isn't always mission focused. It feels like the jokes are going to be in the world itself, not shoved in your face.

Real life is already a parody of itself half the time, so maybe Rockstar doesn't need to go as hard. I read about an influencer dying during a penis enlargement and getting buried in a gold casket the other day. You can't write that. I think GTA 6 will be less overtly funny than V, but the satire will still be there if you go looking for it. I'm not worried. Rockstar knows how to balance this stuff.

Satire per minute is the wrong metric. The beach ads in the Extended Look sit in the background, same placement as V's billboards. That's where the jokes live.
