GTA 6’s Weather System Sounds Like A Big Step Up

Caught the GameSpot piece on the Game Informer interview with Owen Shepherd, Rockstar's VP of art for lighting and rendering. The weather system in GTA 6 got re-engineered to be more localized and persistent, and that's the kind of detail I didn't know I wanted.

He said the goal was making Leonida's weather feel dynamically solid with a sense of scale they've never hit before. So instead of one big weather state across the whole map, you get fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the region. That means a broad spectrum of weather happening at once.

Florida's whole deal is heat, humidity, and rain that pops up out of nowhere. You can be standing in sunshine and see a downpour a few blocks over. GTA 6 is supposedly doing that with localized rain showers. Rainbows show up too. And after rain passes, the ground stays wet with puddles forming. That persistence is the part that gets me.

Wind got its own overhaul. Offshore breezes after sunset, convectional updrafts, and buildings blocking airflow. Hair and debris swirl on rooftops. Gusts ripple the water and bend grass in the swamps. That's the kind of thing that makes the world feel alive when you're just standing there.

Tropical storms and hurricanes are in too, along with thunder and lightning. Shepherd didn't say how any of it affects gameplay, so no clue if a hurricane can knock down trees or structures. I'd be surprised if they built all that and didn't let it mess with missions somehow.

November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Standard is $80, Ultimate is $100. Weather like this might actually justify the wait.
