aaron garbut basically said rockstar didn't compromise on anything for gta 6
Saw this quote from Aaron Garbut floating around and it's the kind of thing that makes the wait feel almost worth it. He's talking about the pressure on the team and how they dealt with it by just trying to overdeliver. Normally you'd have to pick between scale and detail, or detail and interaction, but according to him they went the other way on this one. Everything got dialed up. Detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction, density. All of it. He says they've never created anything close to this before.
That's a wild statement coming from the studio that made RDR2, which already felt like it had a ridiculous amount of systems and hand placed stuff. If GTA 6 is on another level entirely, I don't know how my free time survives November.
Someone in the thread brought up Todd Howard's old line about how as game devs you can do anything but you can't do everything, and said Rockstar basically responded with hold my 13 years and 2 billion dollars. That got a laugh out of me but it's also kind of true. They've had the time and the budget to just brute force the problem, and from the extended look it seems like they actually did.
I keep thinking about what density means for a map like Leonida. RDR2 had a lot of empty space that was still interesting because of the wildlife and weather. GTA 6 has to fill a modern Florida with people, traffic, storefronts, all that. If they've managed to make every corner feel alive without it turning into visual noise, that's the real achievement.
My only worry is that all this density might make the game feel overwhelming at first. Like you step outside and there's too much happening to know what to do. But then I remember how RDR2 eased you into its world and I stop worrying. Rockstar knows how to pace that stuff.
Anyway, Garbut's quote is exactly what I wanted to hear this close to launch. No hedging, no "we'll see," just straight up saying they went all in. November 19th can't get here fast enough.
