GTA 6 devs spent years "going to strip clubs" and the beach to research Florida life

GamesRadar put out a piece today about the research phase for GTA 6, and it sounds like Rockstar went all in on getting Leonida right. The headline is that devs spent years doing field work in Florida, hitting strip clubs, hanging out on beaches, and riding along with ex cops to soak up the local vibe.

I know people joke about Rockstar's attention to detail, but this is a whole different level. Actually spending years in the state to study how people talk, how they move, what the nightlife actually feels like. That kind of stuff shows up in the final game in ways you don't always notice right away. The way an NPC leans on a bar, the way a cop car idles at a light. It all comes from somewhere.

The article mentions Rockstar is dedicated to realism, which tracks with everything we've seen so far. The Extended Look already had that grimy Florida energy in a few shots. If they really sent people out to strip clubs and beaches for years, that explains why the world feels less like a set and more like a place.

Part of me wonders how much of that research ends up as background flavor versus actual mechanics. Like, did the ex cop ride alongs influence the wanted system or police AI? We won't know until November, but it's cool to think about.

Either way, I'm glad they put in the work. A lot of studios would just look at photos and call it a day. Rockstar sending people to live in Florida for years is exactly the kind of obsessive nonsense that makes their games hit different.
