PlayStation Boss: “Creativity Is For Humans, Not AI”

Caught the Paley summit coverage and this AI talk from Strauss Zelnick and Sony's Hiroki Totoki seemed relevant with GTA 6 a month out.

Totoki basically said creativity is a human thing and AI won't replace people in game development. He's fine with his teams using AI in certain ways but wants to keep the rights and creators protected.

Zelnick had a different angle. He thinks AI itself won't replace a developer, but a developer who ignores AI might get replaced by someone who uses it. Then he described AI as datasets, compute, and language models, and said datasets are always backward-looking while real creativity is forward-looking. His Home Alone example was funny, that movie was a total surprise hit and no algorithm would have predicted it.

What stood out to me is the confirmation that there's no generative AI in GTA 6. We've heard that before but hearing it again from Take-Two while they talk about using AI for workflows elsewhere is reassuring. Rockstar clearly isn't letting it touch the actual game content.

There's still a lot of pushback from devs and players about job security and legal stuff, and I get it. But if Rockstar keeps GTA 6 clean of AI content while using it for boring backend stuff, that feels like the right balance.

Do you think Rockstar's no AI stance for GTA 6 will survive post-launch updates or is it just launch window positioning?
