Netflix’s Push Into Gaming Continues To Fall Short

Netflix has been trying to make gaming happen for years now and the numbers still look rough. A memo reported by the WSJ says only 3.5% of subscribers play games monthly. That's 10% below their own 2026 target for reach and engagement. Back in 2022 it was under 1%, so it's grown, but not exactly a breakout.

They've shifted priorities a bunch. At one point they had a AAA studio with former Overwatch and Halo people. Then they shut it down and pivoted to mobile and social stuff. Now co-CEO Ted Sarandos says they're not dropping gaming anytime soon. His pitch is that someone finishes a show and can stay in the Netflix ecosystem through tie-in games. Stuff like Stranger Things and Love is Blind games, plus original ones like Unhinged and The Conjuring: Unspoken.

The GTA 6 part is what got my attention. Netflix hosted the Extended Look back in August, and apparently that single trailer drove 100,000 Netflix sign-ups in the US. That's wild. Rockstar's marketing reach is on another level. Netflix spent years trying to get people to care about their games, then one GTA 6 video does more for sign-ups than most of their gaming push.

I'm not saying Netflix games are doomed. 3.5% of a huge subscriber base is still millions of people. But it feels like they keep throwing stuff at the wall. Live sports, podcasts, mobile games, tie-ins. The GTA 6 trailer was probably the smartest thing they've done in gaming this year, even if it wasn't really their game.

Do you think Netflix will ever figure out gaming, or was the GTA 6 Extended Look just a one-off boost?
