The day GTA 6 pre-loading starts, unionizing Rockstar developers will vote on the studio's future

Caught this GamesRadar piece and the timing is something else. The day GTA 6 preloading kicks off, Rockstar devs who've been organizing are voting on a union agreement. Not a coincidence I'd bet, but still wild to see both things land at once.

The deal apparently covers pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working, and generative AI policies. That AI part feels huge for a studio like Rockstar. We've all seen how much chatter there is about NPC behavior and procedural stuff in 6, so having actual language about generative AI in a union agreement is pretty forward looking.

I'm not gonna pretend I know the inner workings of Rockstar's pay structure, but after the crunch stories from the RDR2 days and the insane scale of this game, seeing overtime and redundancies in there makes sense. The fact it's all being voted on right when preloads start is almost poetic. One half of the fanbase is clearing SSD space, the other half is watching workers decide how the next few years at that studio go.

Flexible working also caught my eye. Rockstar has always felt like a very in person, very locked down kind of place. If that's actually changing, it might shape how they handle post launch support for 6. Not saying it'll affect the game itself by launch, but the studio culture behind it matters for the long haul.

Anyway, I hope it passes. The people making this thing deserve to have a say in how their own jobs run, especially with a release this massive hanging over them. Good timing or not, I'm rooting for them.
