GTA 6 Developers Are About To Do Something Historic

Saw this over on GameSpot. Rockstar's UK devs are getting a union recognition vote, and the window lands right on top of the GTA 6 launch. November 12 through 26. So while the rest of us are booting up Leonida, the people at Rockstar North in Edinburgh will be deciding whether to bring in the IWGB Union at Rockstar. If it passes, it'd be the biggest union in the UK games sector.

The vote covers a bunch of stuff that's been simmering for years. Pay, bonuses, overtime, generative AI policies, work from home setups, and what happens if layoffs come. That last one feels pointed. More than 30 IWGB members got let go from Rockstar UK back in October 2025. The union says it was retaliation for organizing. Rockstar says those people were fired for leaking details about upcoming games. There's an employment tribunal wrapping up around the same time, final arguments are November 17 and 18. So we could get the tribunal outcome and the union vote within days of each other, all while GTA 6 is launching. Wild timing.

Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar's publishing boss, told Bloomberg the company will go wherever the team goes, and if the team wants a union, they'll have one. That sounds decent on paper. We'll see how it plays out in practice. The IWGB committee member Shanti Easton-Steel had a line about how players will finally experience all the work and creativity in GTA 6, and the workers will finally have their voices heard too. She mentioned the gender pay gap, inconsistent overtime policies, and job security worries after the game ships. Those are real concerns for a studio this size.

I've seen plenty of arguments in the comments about whether Rockstar crunches or not, especially leading up to November 19. Having an actual recognized union would change how some of that gets handled, at least in the UK. Rockstar North is the lead dev on GTA 6, so this isn't some small satellite office. If the union gets in, it might push other UK studios to follow. The IWGB president said the vote is as historic as the game release for anyone who cares about the people keeping the industry running. That's probably overselling it a little, but for Rockstar workers it's a big deal.

I'm not going to pretend this affects my day one experience. It doesn't. But I'd rather the people making the game I've waited years for not be fighting management over basic stuff while the rest of us celebrate. We'll know how it shakes out by late November.
