rockstar's marketing for gta 6 is weird but it's working

I remember when GTA 5 pre-orders went live back in late 2012. We'd already seen a couple trailers, had a rough idea of the map, knew the three protags. It felt like we had a decent picture of what we were buying. Fast forward to now and we've got two trailers, a few screenshots, and pre-orders that opened a month ago with no gameplay in sight. It's a completely different vibe.

Rockstar's always been secretive, but this time they've taken it to another level. They dropped the second trailer in May 2025, and since then it's been mostly silence aside from the pre-order announcement in June. No deep dives, no gameplay breakdowns, no third trailer. Just a couple of magazine covers and some vague descriptions of Leonida. And yet, the pre-orders are through the roof. The Ultimate Edition sold out in a lot of places within days.

I think they know exactly what they're doing. The mystery is part of the hype. They don't need to show us 10 minutes of gameplay because the name alone sells it. But it does feel a little weird to have my $100 locked in without seeing a single second of actual gameplay. I'm not complaining, I trust Rockstar, but it's a bold strategy. They're basically saying "you know what you're getting" and we're all nodding along.

I wonder if they'll drop a gameplay trailer closer to launch, maybe in September or October. That would be the classic move. But part of me thinks they might just ride the silence all the way to November 19th. Either way, I'm here for it. The less I know going in, the more I'll be surprised when I finally boot it up.
