justice on scoring gta 6, keeping the hype out of the studio

Caught the BBC Radio 1 interview with Justice earlier and it's pretty interesting how they're handling the GTA 6 score. Gaspard Augé basically said they're fully aware of the hype and how long people have been waiting, but they're looking at it from the outside. Like watching a colossus approach without letting it get inside their heads. Smart move honestly, because the pressure on this soundtrack has to be insane.
What got me is how they described the sound. They never sat down and said "we need an 80s track." The retro flavor just happened, but at the same time there's a futuristic edge to it. Augé mentioned the guitar isn't even a real guitar, it's a synth, because no actual guitar could get that phasey, slightly futuristic tone. That detail alone makes me want to hear more of the score in context.
Flower in a Hurricane already passed 2.8 million plays on YouTube in under a week, which is wild for a game soundtrack single. Justice worked with Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard on it. Xavier de Rosnay said these are people they've always wanted to work with, and they didn't think the combination would necessarily fit at first, but it came together really naturally. Now they've got a whole record with all of them.
The full GTA 6 album is 34 songs written specifically for the game, with Keith Richards and Travis Scott also contributing. On top of that we're getting the next evolution of in-game radio with stations and podcasts. The fact they got Keith Richards on a GTA album is still wild to me.
