MikeShowSha's private preview details: police crashes aren't scripted, NPCs react to your outfit, newspapers are collectibles
MikeShowSha got invited to Rockstar North for a private preview and he's been spilling details on his channel. Some of this stuff is exactly what I wanted to hear.
First off, police vehicle crashes are not scripted. During the demo they shot out tires multiple times and got different results every time. Cars swerved, flipped, all that. That's huge for chase variety.
NPC behavior sounds way more reactive than GTA 5. Mike said near a gym, NPCs were dressed in athletic gear, but around Jason and Lucia's home they looked more casual. There was a whole encounter where a woman made a snide comment about Lucia's outfit, her boyfriend tried to calm things down, then Lucia knocked her out and called Jason over. The boyfriend saw Jason coming and bolted, left her on the ground. You can approach, greet, or provoke NPCs and they react differently. Mike said that interaction stood out more than the high NPC density, which is saying something.
Some characters you see on the in-game social media feed can actually be found in the open world. Newspapers are a thing too, you can pick them up off shelves, open them, flip through. Mike called them optional collectibles.
Map stuff: once free roam opens up, there are no regional boundaries. Unexplored areas are covered in fog that clears as you visit. Focus mode highlights doors you can enter. Stores in the demo were accessible, but Mike couldn't confirm every building is enterable.
Death and arrest details: dying sends you to a hospital. Getting arrested respawns you outside the jail and you lose some money. Weapons you picked up from the world can be confiscated, but personal weapons stay in your vehicle trunk.
Mike also saw Jason and Lucia at extreme body weight and max muscle but he's not saying what they look like. Keeping that one close to the chest.
I'm most excited about the police crash thing. Scripted chase moments always felt cheap in older games. If the physics are doing that on their own, chases are going to be replayable as hell.
