did the math on that extended look map chunk, it's tiny
So I got bored and decided to figure out how much of the map we actually saw in that little black box from the Extended Look. You know the one, the zoomed in portion they showed when they were talking about the world. Turns out it's basically nothing.
I did everything in pixels to keep it accurate. The full map including water is around 890,000 pixels squared. Land only is about 470,500. The chunk they showed us? 1,168 pixels squared. That's it.
Divide the land area by that chunk and you get roughly 403. So you could fit about 403 of those little boxes into the landmass alone. Which means that one screenshot represents 0.25% of the land area. If you count water too, it drops to 0.13% of the entire map.
I know map size isn't everything, but this puts it in perspective. We've seen two trailers and an extended look and we've still only been shown a fraction of a percent of the actual playable space. Rockstar is holding back so much.
And that's just the surface area. Doesn't even account for interiors, verticality, underwater stuff, whatever else they've got hidden. The scale of this thing is going to be absurd.
I remember people complaining after the first trailer that Vice City looked small. This math should shut that down real quick. We haven't seen anything yet.

0.25% and we still ain't seen the highways. All that open road means proper top speed runs, praying for long straights out past Port Gellhorn.
Nuts when you think about it. Back in 2002 the whole Vice City map came folded inside the manual and we still spent years finding new corners. Now we're doing pixel math on a little black box. Different era.
Honestly I don't mind. Half the magic of San Andreas was flying blind over the hills and realizing there was an entire other city waiting. Rockstar holding back is fine by me.
