Could Rockstar sell GTA Online 2 as a separate game? The marketing has me thinking.
Rockstar's been real careful with the GTA 6 marketing so far. Every trailer, every press release, it's all about the single-player experience. Lucia and Jason, Vice City, the state of Leonida. Not a peep about Online. Compare that to GTA 5's rollout where they were hyping the online mode before the game even launched. It feels deliberate.
And honestly, it makes you wonder if they're planning to treat GTA Online 2 as its own thing from day one. Not just a mode bundled with the game, but a separate product you buy. They already dipped their toes in that water with the current GTA Online standalone on PS5 and Series X|S, selling it for like $20. So the infrastructure and the mindset are already there.
The OP on Reddit raised a good point: with how much content they'll probably pump into Online 2 over the years, could they slap a one-time price tag on it? Or even go full subscription like WoW? I mean, GTA Online prints money through Shark Cards, but a subscription would be steady, predictable cash. And let's be real, plenty of us would pay it if the content was there.
But I don't know. Rockstar's whole model is built on getting as many people in the door as possible and then tempting them with microtransactions. A paywall, even a small one, might cut into that player count. They'd have to weigh that against the guaranteed revenue from a subscription or a one-off purchase. My gut says they'll keep it free to play with Shark Cards, maybe with a premium tier for early access to new stuff. A full subscription feels like a stretch for a console audience that's used to paying for PS Plus or Game Pass already. Still, the fact that we're even having this conversation shows how much the industry has shifted.

if they gate online 2 behind a sub fee half the rp servers i know will hemorrhage players. most of us are already running fivem on top of whatever rockstar charges.
standalone makes sense though. gets more bodies in the door for rp communities without forcing the sp price tag. shark cards already fund the thing, dont fix what aint broke.
Standalone keeps recruitment open. I don't need a paywall slowing down crew assembly when there's a score to prep.
standalone makes sense though
the silence is the signal. two trailers. zero mention of the other side. observe the pattern.
they tested the $20 waters. standalone will return. but a sub wall chokes the shark card vein. they won't drain that dry.
standalone makes sense though
Yeah but $20 is peanuts. Rockstar nets more from a single $25 Shark Card. It's a volume play. Pack the server, run the MC business loop, and let the whales subsidize the rest. A sub fee trims the herd before they even step into the nightclub.
