what if rockstar makes us lie to ourselves as both jason and lucia
Been turning this over since the extended look. The dual protagonist thing has a lot more potential for messing with us than just switching between two people.
In GTA V, Michael and Trevor's whole mess was already there. We just watched it play out. But with Jason and Lucia, we're inside both of them. What if Rockstar doesn't give us the full picture when we swap? Like, as Jason you're planning a bank job with Lucia and she tells you she's all in, everything's on track. But five minutes earlier, as Lucia, you quietly made a deal with another crew to sell her cut out from under him. You built that lie with your own hands. Then you switch back and sit there as Jason, believing her. You're the one lying and the one getting played at the same time.
That's the part that sticks with me. The game could split information between the two characters on purpose. While you're Jason, you don't know what Lucia's doing behind the scenes. When you're Lucia, you're running her secret moves behind Jason's back. The characters are lying to each other, but you're the one carrying out both sides of it. At some point the game could just leave you asking whose side you're actually on, and how much you're using one of them to manipulate the other.
It's basically the prisoner's dilemma, if you've ever read about game theory. And in theater they call it dramatic irony. The audience knows the trap is coming while the character walks right into it. Rockstar could put that feeling directly in your head. You'd be the actor lying on stage and the audience member who knows the truth. You'd fall into a trap you built yourself.
Maybe I'm being too optimistic about how deep they'll go with it. But it makes a lot of sense for a Bonnie and Clyde style story where trust is the whole point.
Would that make the story hit harder, or would it just feel like the game is gaslighting you the whole time?
