Inner Light at the end of the Extended Look flew under the radar, but it might be telling us a lot
Everyone's losing it over the graphics and that "salad years" speech, but I haven't seen a single thread about the song they chose for the closing of the Extended Look. That feels like a miss.
If you actually sit with the lyrics to Inner Light, it's not some generic love song or party track. The chorus goes something like "You wanna dance, you don't know how to get it on the floor... Close your eyes, just follow the inner light." Read that again. It's not about two people already dancing. It's about one person completely stuck in their own darkness, and the other person trying to guide them out. Not playing savior. Just telling them to trust their own instincts.
I think there's a double meaning here.
On one level, it's Jason and Lucia. One of them is buried in the underworld of Leonida, and the other is desperately trying to pull them out, or build something real based on trust. That fits the whole "quitting crime" angle we've been hearing about.
But there's a meta layer too. Rockstar is the speaker. We're the ones stuck in boring routines, wanting to "dance" but not knowing how to get on the floor. Rockstar hands us the game, but it only works if we bring our own imagination and agency to it. They're not going to hold our hand the whole way. Follow the inner light, make your own choices.
If that's what they were going for with the song choice, then the story might be way more philosophical than a standard crime simulator or heist narrative. Which honestly has me more excited than any of the graphical leaps we saw.
Am I reaching here, or does that song choice feel way too intentional to be random?
